Catalyst Paper to close Elk Falls mill permanently

Catalyst Paper is permanently closing the Elk Falls paper mill in September this year. The company had already shut down the mill indefinitely in February 2009. It used to produce newsprint, printing, and writing paper on three machines with a total capacity of 526,000 tpy.rnThe decision follows a recent change of management at Catalyst Paper. The new president and CEO, Kevin J. Clarke, only took up the post at the end of June. In a press release he says the decision is due to profitable economic operation of the Elk Falls mill having been made impossible by the sharp reduction in demand on the commodity paper market combined with inflated labour and tax costs. Some 100 employees are directly affected by the permanent closure.
