Austrian paper industry utilised significantly more recovered fibre during 2010

Austria's paper industry used more recovered pa-perthan ever before last year. The recovered paper utilisation rate was 8.3 per cent or 190,000 tonnes higherthan 2009 at 2.48 million tonnes, Austropa-per, the association representing Austria's paper industry, announced at the start of April. Other key figures also improved, such as the amount of recovered paper collected and the industry's paper production and revenues. Notwithstanding these trends, businesses'margins were increasingly being pinched by very high raw material costs, Austropapier's president Wolfgang Pfarl cautioned at the presentation of the annual report for 2010. Recovered paper prices had been spiralling into unchartered territory since April 2010. The challenge of securing long-term wood supply was further complicating matters. With more and more wood being incinerated as a source of energy, Austrian producers had to import growing amounts of industrial logs and wood chips. At the same time, wood procurement costs surged strongly.
