St. Regis receives first approval for power plant

St. Regis Paper Company has received approval from Kent County Council for the construction of a waste-to-energy incinerator at the Kems-ley production site, according to a company press release. St. Regis Paper, in co-operation with E.ON and recycling company Wheelabrator Technologies, plans to construct a combined heat and power plant which will be fired with up to 550,000 t of waste and solid recovered fuel a year, to ensure energy supply to the mill and become less dependent on volatile gas prices. According to the company, the new facility will produce around 40 MW of electricity and 60 MW of thermal energy.
