Migration of contaminants from packaging to food is attracting increasing public attention

The contamination of food caused by mine-ral oil residues in recycled cartonboard is not a new subject, yet one that has increasingly come under discussion due to last year's publications of the Swiss chemist Konrad Grob of the Zurich Cantonal Laboratory. Discussions on mineral oil contaminants in food, however, have so far pri-marily been restricted to the industry and retai-lers. Consumers, who are still in a state of shock caused by the dioxin scandal in Germany, have either not become aware of the topic at all or on-ly gained peripheral knowledge of the migration of contaminants from recycled board packaging into foodstuffs.
