Following massive protests in the Chinese city of Qidong against the planned discharge of waste-water into the sea from Oji Paper Co.'s Nantong fine paper mill around 100 km away, Chinese officials cancelled the construction of the pipeline, and paper production at the mill was temporarily stopped. Xinhuan, China's largest Chinese news agency, reported that on 28 July several thousand people protested against the construction of a wastewater pipeline between Nantong and Qidong, Jiangsu Province, in eastern China. Sina Weibo, the Chinese social network, even spoke of up to 100,000 demonstrators.
