Stora Enso to restructure its coated magazine paper business

Stora Enso will restructure its coated magazine paper operations. The company says the continuing challenging market conditions have prompted itto announce measures to improve cost efficiency and productivity of its European sites in this segment. The measures will affect the German Kabel mill in Hagen, the French paper mill at Corbehem as well as the Finnish Veitsiluoto site in Kemi, Stora Enso revealed during the presentation of its business figures for 2011. Stora Enso plans to achieve annual cost reductions in the new Printing and Reading businessarea of around €48m which are to achieve full impact as of the third quarter of 2013. To this end, Stora Enso will reduce the number of employees in all three mills by a total of 110 (most likely 44 in Finland, 44 in Germany and 22 in France) by the end of 2012. In addition, Stora Enso is to invest around €18m to improve quality and productivity as well as save energy at the three mills. The company said it does not intend to cut paper production and permanent closures are cur- rently also not planned. The Kabel mill employs 620 people and annually produces 495,000 t of LWC, MWC and HWC paper on two machines. Corbehem has a production capacity of 330,000 tpy of LWC paper and employs around 350 people; in Finland, Stora Enso employs 780 people and also operates two paper machines with a combined capacity of 450,000 tpy of LWC paper. Whether the plans are realised will, however, depend on the outcome of the local co-determination negotiations.
