PTT expects good results for Finnish forest industry in 2013

The future does not look all that bad for the Finnish forest industry. At least this is what Finnish research institute Pellervo Economic Research (PTT) is predicting for 2013 as a whole. The institute expects the industry's profitability to improve in this period of time as well as in 2014. The signs are not pointing to growth in all areas, however. PTT is expecting, for example, that paper production in 2013 will be 3-4% lower than last year. An improvement is not to be expected next year either, indeed further reductions in output are more likely, the institute said, attributing the situation to the structural decline in demand. Falling demand is also going to make capacity closures necessary in order to reduce the supply of paper, PTT said, adding that paper machine closures are possible in Finland as well.
