The European Commission's DG Environment plans to introduce a binding municipal waste recycling target of 70% in 2030 for all member states in the circular economy package to be released next month, according to its Director-General Karl Falkenberg. Speaking at an event organised by the German waste management association BDE at the IFAT trade show in Munich in early May, Mr Falkenberg explained that it was necessary to allow enough time to reach a uniform ambitious target, given the current differences in recycling rates. The Director-General stressed that many issues were still subject to discussion and negotiation between the European Commission's various directorates and that he by no means had a finished copy of the proposals "tucked away in a drawer". Nevertheless, he assured representatives of the European waste management sector that more and higher recycling targets would be released soon. "Christmas is just around the corner and it's coming in June."
