European Commission to set up a new method of calculating recycling rates

The European Commission wants to establish a new method of calculating recycling rates. The institution believes that the recycling rate should only include the treatment of wastes that were actually recycled, Helmut Maurer from the European Commission's Environment Directorate General announced at an event hosted by the German Federal Environment Ministry (BMUB) during the IFAT trade fair in Munich in early May. The new calculation method is to become a Europe-wide standard for calculating recycling rates in member states. This approach would also harmonise provisions contained in the Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste and the Waste Framework Directive, Mr Maurer said.
