Irving Pulp and Paper to upgrade Saint John pulp mill

The J.D. Irving group of companies of Canada is planning to invest CAD450m (€290m) in updating the production plant at the Saint John pulp mill of its subsidiary Irving Pulp and Paper Limited in the province of New Brunswick in the next two years. The group reports that the first phase of the modernisation measures involves installing a new chip screening and preparation system. In addition, fourteen old chip digesters are to be replaced with a new one. The company estimates a cost of CAD198m (€128m) for the first phase of the project, expected to run over a period of 24 months. In the second phase of the project, which Irving Pulp and Paper says is likely to cost CAD250m (€162m) and last 30 months, the company will be installing a new pulp drying unit. The new system is to replace the three existing dryers at the site, it is said.
