General strike in Finland brings production to a halt

Several paper machines and pulp plants were not in operation in Finland on 18 September as workers nationwide went on strike, including members of the unions Paperiliitto and Puuli-itto from the Finnish pulp and paper industry and the forestry industry. Employee representatives had called on workers to down tools for 24 hours, starting Friday in the third week of September at 6 a.m. Basically all pulp and paper mills in Finland were affected, confirmed spokespeople from various companies. According to UPM, only its biorefinery in Lappeenranta was unaffected by the strike. Work in Finnish ports as well as all types of logistics within the country were also severely constrained by the labour action.
