Fire hits Smurfit Kappa mill in Townsend Hook

On the morning of 12 August a fire broke out at Smurfit Kappa's recycled containerboard mill in Townsend Hook, Kent. The fire was quickly brought under control thanks to the company's sprinkler system and the firefighters, a Smurfit Kappa spokesperson told EUWID. No one was injured during the incident with limited material damage. ,,We have restarted production within less than 24 hours", the spokesperson said. Smurfit Kappa is currently ramping up the paper machine in Townsend Hook after an extensive rebuild, which started in mid-2013. The refurbished machine with a capacity of 250,000 tpy of lightweight recycled containerboard replaces two older and smaller machines. In earlier reports Smurfit Kappa said the Townsend Hook investment had a volume of €114m.
