EU funding Valchem R&D project on bio-chemicals

The European Union is granting €13.1m to Valchem, a joint project that UPM is undertaking with the ethanol producer Sekab, the bio-chemicals group Metabolic Explorer and the Technical University of Darmstadt. The project is part of BBI Joint Undertaking, a public-private partnership between the EU and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), whose founding members also include UPM. Valchem aims to develop innovative processes from wood to end products in the bio-chemicals sector. It uses the partners' demonstration plants to develop wood-based bio-chemicals that can compete with fossil alternatives in terms of their quality and production costs. Valchem has a total budget of €18.5m.
