VDP and TU Darmstadt complete research project on use of mixed RCP in newsprint production

Would it be possible to stop using sorted graphic paper for deinking(1.11) for the production of newsprint and start using mixed recovered paper and board (1.02) instead? This was the central question of a research project coordinated by the research and technology committee of the German pulp and paper association VDP that was conducted at the Darmstadt University of Technology (TU Darmstadt). The answer was neither a clear 'yes' nor a clear 'no'. However, the project revealed which areas may present problems and how these problems could possibly be tackled. According to the project's final report, paper made from mixed recovered paper and board gives another visual impression than standard newsprint. In particular, fibre bundles and coloured fibres are visible, and all in all the sheets seem coarser and less homogeneous. However, the final report gave no indication of whether or not this could be criteria for exclusion.
