Softwood pulp consumption in European paper mills traditionally low in August

European paper mills' softwood pulp consumption developed downhill as usual in August. The latest Utipulp statistics show a reduction of 35,000 t against the previous month to 325,000t. The data shows that converters' stocks in Europe rose by 11,000t to 203,000t in the month under review. They had amounted to 213,000t in August 2015. Whereas Utipulp has no longer included details about European converters' consumption or stocks of hardwood pulp in its monthly statistics since August 2015, quarterly figures are now published in the association's new quarterly statistics introduced this year. Utipulp's statistics for the second quarter show that at 2.97 million t, European paper mills consumed 81,000 t less softwood and hardwood pulp in than in the same period of last year. 1.79 million t of the total consumption was accounted for by bleached hardwood pulp, equating to a reduction of 83,0001 against the same quarter of last year. Utilisation of bleached softwood pulp, on the other hand, rose slightly by 5,000t to 1.07 million t.
