Resolute Forest Products sees itself at a disadvantage on the market for SC paper in North America and has turned to the Canadian Minister of International Trade, Ms C. Freeland, for help in finding a solution. Resolute has stated in a press release that it has no option but to take downtime at its Keno-gami mill for SC paper in the Canadian province of Quebec from 23 June to 4 July this year due to the difficult state of the market. Resolute explains that part of the reason for this market-driven downtime are measures adopted by the former regional government and the former provincial government for assisting paper manufacturer Port Hawkesbury in Nova Scotia. Also, as a result of this support, protectionist measures have been adopted in the USA to counteract this support policy, which puts Resolute under pressure from two sides. The company says it had already had to close its Laurentide mill in Quebec two years ago as a consequence of the assistance for Port Hawkesbury.
