Russian embargo on exports pushes demand higher on Poland's recovered paper market

One main question is on the minds of market players active in the Polish recovered paper business: What will be the effects of stronger demand from Ukraine that has materialised over the past few weeks? Ukrainian paper mills, which used to be the biggest importer of Russian recovered paper, have been purchasing more in Poland since the Russian Government banned recovered paper exports in December.The increase in exports has so far not had an impact on market prices in Poland. Nonetheless, experts anticipate that the picture might be different in February. Businesses in the graphic paper sector are working to raise prices. Negotiations about new newsprint and magazine paper contracts are largely done and dusted. In most areas, paper manufacturers are leaving talks with higher prices in their pockets, although the increases are much smaller than manufacturers had hoped for. Suppliers had announced higher prices for woodfree uncoated and coated paper grades. Many manufacturers have pushed back the starting date to February, although the first findings are already emerging. The price curve for corrugated case material in Poland is tending to point downward. While prices for recycled grades had only been amended slightly, discounts for kraftliner were much larger.
