Nestle invests €10m in switch to paper packaging

Nestle will invest €10m in its German plant in Hamburg, which produces Smarties. The investment aims to switch the packaging for Smarties from plastics to paper. The existing share of paper packaging solutions is relatively small at just 10 per cent so the current initiative will represent a global substitution of around 250 million plastic packs annually, the company informed. Nestle reports that it has installed two new lines to package Smarties confectionery products in paper at its Hamburg chocolate plant. Two more lines are to follow. Employing an 800-strong workforce, the plant produces over 20,000 t of Smarties annually. Paper for the new packaging will be sourced sustainably and will be coated. The packaging can be recycled as recovered paper without any problems, Nestle adds. To ensure that the packaging is properly recycled, Nestle has printed instructions on the packaging.
