Kemira and Danimer Scientific develop biodegradable coating

Finnish specialty chemicals producer Kemira and US biotechnology firm Danimer Scientific will cooperate to develop biodegradable coatings for the paper and board industries. The two companies agreed on a partnership in December 2020. Danimer produces a polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymer from renewable sources such as canola and soy seeds. The partners will evaluate to which extent the PHA biopolymer can be commercially used for the manufacture of recyclable paper and board products. Kemira explains that the global barrier coating market is growing by around 8 per cent annually. Global market of what is known as dispersion barriers amount to around €500m, with an average annual growth rate of 10 per cent, reports the company, adding that among other factors, rising global demand for coated paper and board packaging contribute to these growth rates, the company said.
