England will ban plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds in April 2020

The distribution and/or sale of single-use plastic drinks straws, stirrers and plastic-stemmed cotton buds will be prohibited in England starting in April 2020, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) announced last week. There are to be exceptions to the bans, particularly with respect to plastic drinking straws, the British environment ministry explained. The government will continue to allow the sale of single- use plastic straws in registered pharmacies and in catering establishments.
