Stora Enso plans production of formed fibre products at Hylte

Stora Enso is expanding the portfolio at its Hylte mill in Sweden. In an effort to fight plastic waste, the company plans to build a new production line for formed fibre products at the site, investing €5m. According to Stora Enso, the initial annual capacity during the pilot stage will be about 50 million units, with the intention to expand. First products are expected to be on the market by the end of 2019. Formed fibre products are recyclable and biodegradable products which do not contain any plastic. They are made of various chemical pulps and CTMP, which are pressed into a desired shape in a molding machine, Stora Enso explains. Potential products include single-use food packaging items such as plastic-free cups, plates or coffee cup lids as well as non-food applications.
