Iggesund Workington: energy crops improve biomass supply

The Iggesund Workington cartonboard mill in the Northwest England of Iggesund is using annual plants from the vicinity of the as biomass for its combined heat and power (CHP) plant. At present, around 5% of the biomass input into the power plant consists of short rotation coppice willows, which are cultivated by local farmers on marginal areas that are less fertile or otherwise hardly used, and harvested after three years. As Iggesund states, the plantation also counteracts flooding and promotes local biodiversity.
