UPM mulls rebuilding a fine paper machine at Nordland Papier to produce release liner

Even more fine paper capacity might be removed from the market, depending on the outcome of a feasibility study being conducted by UPM. The Finnish group announced it is considering rebuilding its fine paper machine PM 2 at the Nordland Papier mill in Germany to make release liner instead. According to a company spokesman, PM 2 has a capacity of 150,000-180,000 tpy depending on the grammage of the paper. The capacity of release liner - if the study outcome is positive - would be lower owing to the lighter weight of this paper. It is not yet clear exactly how high the capacity would be, the spokesman said. The investment sum necessary for the rebuild has also not been determined yet but it would be a "larger investment", he added.
