Quality First conference initiates dialogue on recycling quality

Recovered paper exports to China took centre stage also at the Quality First conference held by the UK's Recycling Association, which is not surprising, for the country is Europe's largest exporter of recovered paper. Many experts feared that the British market would collapse last summer when China announced changes to import rules for different recyclable materials. The collapse has so far been averted because British companies pulled out all the stops to meet the required maximum contamination rate of 0.5%, explained Simon Ellin, CEO of Recycling Association, adding: "If you'd asked me back in January if this would be possible I would have said no. I'm happy to be proved wrong." Even mixed paper, which cannot be delivered to China any more, escaped the catastrophe.
