Assocarta: Italy needs waste-to-energy plants to improve energy recovery rate

Italy's rate of energy recovery is too low and to improve it, the country needs waste-to-energy plants. This was one of messages expressed by Gi-rolamo Marchi, president of the Italian paper producers'association Assocarta, at the organisation's annual meeting in Rome. The meeting focused on the circular economy in general and in the paper industry as well as on developments in the industry. Only 29% of waste in Italy is thermally treated, which is considerably lower than the European average of 46%. Furthermore, 22% of waste ends up in landfill, a much higher rate than the average of 4% seen across Europe.
