Ahlstrom-Munksjoe to shut down PM 1 in Stenay

Finnish speciality paper and materials producer Ahlstrom-Munksjoe employs about 200 persons at its French Stenay mill, producing flexible packaging paper and one-side coated (CIS) paper for label and graphic applications. Due to increased raw material costs and overcapacity in the global and especially the European market for one-side coated paper, the Stenay mill is reportedly having profitability issues in a highly competitive market. Against this background, Ahlstrom-Munksjo plans to permanently shut down PM 1, the smaller of the two machines at the Stenay mill, and transfer orders to the larger PM 3 in order to adjust production activities to market demand to make the site more competitive. Negotiations with employee representatives began on 30 October. The outcome is expected in January next year, Ahlstrom added.
