The Photo Travel Division (PTD) was established in 1972 at a time of rapid growth in the Photographic Society of America's (PSA) membership. There was a surging demand for recognition of travel as an independent subject category for color slide photographers. Until then, even the best travel images had a hard time when being evaluated by judges trained in pictorial photography.rnPTD founders, notably the late Charles Bowerman, FPSA, spent months hammering out a definition of travel photography to guide photographers and judges alike. That definition, now adapted to digital technology, states: "A photo travel photograph must express the feeling of a time and place, portray a land, its people, or a culture in its natural state, and has no geographical limitations. Ultra close-ups, which lose their identity, studio type model shots, or photographic manipulations, which misrepresent the true situation or alter the content of the image, are unacceptable in Photo Travel competition. No pictorial elements may be moved, cloned, added, deleted, rearranged, or combined.
