Public sector professionals: prepare for a change in working practices

The drivers of asset management in recent years - efficiency, more effective space use, collaborative procurement and outsourcing - are no longer sufficient to support the transformation of local government. The public sector at the local level is a complex array of multi-purpose organisations. But the most important unifying factor is that they are all from the same sector and should all have the citizen's interests guiding their actions.This makes it hard to argue against community-based budgeting, and a unified approach to asset management. However, don't get too comfortable with community-based budgets as neighbourhood budgets may be just around the corner.
