As ASDA and Tesco roll out larger stores, often in excess of 100,000 sq ft, they have grown the amount of products that they sell - from clothing and jewellery, to electrical and toys. Tesco now boasts that, as well as having a 31% share of the grocery market, it accounts for 12.5% of all consumer spend. Both supermarkets have also launched non-food store formats - Asda Living and Tesco Homeplus. And it was reported in Property Week, in January 2008, that Tesco is developing a new multi-level 'department store' town centre concept.This could see Tesco go head to head with the traditional department store operators John Lewis, Debenhams and House of Fraser. Not just in a battle for customers, but as competitors to anchor new shopping centres. The 1.5m sq ft out-of-town shopping centre Silverburn, south Glasgow, is anchored by Debenhams, Marks & Spencer and an Tesco Extra.'Given the very limited choice of John Lewis, House of Fraser, Debenhams or M&S to anchor shopping centres, it is unlikely that Silverburn will be the only scheme over the next ten years to have a Tesco Extra anchor,' says Jonathan de Mello, head of property consultancy at Experian.Jeremy Collins, head of retail development at John Lewis, says Tesco now represents new competition, which is healthy 'from a customers point of view'.
