CABE finds lifeline in Design Council merger

When the government announced its "bonfire of the quangos" in mid-October, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) found itself in the flames. Now, the body hopes the conservative localism agenda will save it.On 1 April, CABE will cease to exist, but the body may have found a way to continue its functions. It is working with the Design Council to form a "one-stop shop" for design and still believes it can play an important role in localism.Local communities and authorities will soon have more powers to bring forward schemes, and local communities will have more powers to approve schemes that have wide community backing.
