A Big Slice of Philly Subway: The 40th Street Double Crossover Project

The task was a first for southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), and it was daunting: remove concrete track, install a concrete double crossover and do the work only on weekends while keeping the subway system running during the work week. It was not a typical project for Railroad Construction Co. of South Jersey Inc., but it was one the company was ready to tackle, says James J. Daloisio, president of the family-owned firm. "We're proud of the 40th Street Double Crossover project because it was difficult to keep service safely going while the project was being done," he says. "It was a project that SEPTA's own forces said they would not attempt to do in-house."
