Last year, Class I workforces were stretched thin because of surging traffic. Collectively, large roads hired thousands more workers than they projected to handle the additional carloads. The strained workforces placed more attention on training— Class Is needed to get new recruits up to snuff quickly so trainees could begin working in yards and shops.
