The cost of doing business

Capacity long has topped U.S. freight railroads' list of concerns — not so much where to expand it but how to pay for it. Now, railroads believe they know what the total price tag is to address capacity needs during the next 30 years: $148 billion. Last month, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) released the National Rail Freight Infrastructure Capacity and Investment Study, which determined railroads will need to invest that much to build more track, bridges, tunnels, terminals and other facilities to keep up with freight transportation demand that's expected to double within 30 years.
