U.S. ethanol production to triple in two years, consultant says

U.S. railroads are banking on ethanol as a traffic driver for the next few years. They should, if this projection is any indication: U.S. ethanol production capacity will more than triple in less than two years, according to commodity futures and risk management consultant John Stewart & Associates. Capacity will reach 20.4 billion gallons by August 2009 compared with 6.7 billion gallons in August 2007. In turn, corn consumption for ethanol will more than double from 3.6 billion bushels in crop year 2007-08 to 7.5 billion bushels in 2009-10, according to the firm.
