FRA proposes rule to prohibit train crews from using electronic devices while on duty

Last month, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) proposed a rule that would prohibit railroad operating employees from "improperly" using electronic devices while on duty.rnThe rule would restrict or prohibit on-duty locomotive engineers, conductors, switchmen and other train crew members from using personal or railroad-supplied cell phones and other handheld devices, such as personal digital assistants. Operating employees would be permitted to use cell phones or certain other electronic devices under "highly limited circumstances," according to the FRA.
