In this paper, we show that a network topology has an impact on WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks) performances. Indeed, with random or fixed topologies for different kind of applications with a specific routing protocol, MAC layer and transmission range value, network performances vary in terms of packet lost rate or energy consumption. We conducted a wide range of simulations in order to extract the best parameters configuration values. Then we could be able to help the deployment of any WSN with the best possible performances. For the topology issue, we have handled three random topologies and one fixed grid one. We have also considered various kinds of network sizes and application types. For the routing protocol and transmission range, we choose the must adapted one among AODV, AOMDV, DSR and DSDV with the 802.15.4 MAC layer. We have conducted many simulations through the NS-2 toolbox in order to analyze two relevant performance parameters over WSNs: energy consumption and lost packet rate.
