Intelligent Peripheral Interfaces for Distributed Embedded Control Systems

In the text, an idea of intelligent input/output interfaces for distributed real-time and fault-tolerant embedded control systems is presented. We argued that given the present state of technology it is reasonable to incorporate certain intelligence in peripheral units, which would provide better temporal prediction, higher reliability and improved performance. Further, different approaches for the implementation of such devices are observed. Supported by an adequate overall architecture, enhanced functionalities can easily be done employing simple microcontrollers. For safety related applications, however, instead of microcontrollers simple safety licensable circuits based on ASICs should be used.
