Hospice 'Casa Sperantei' - pioneering palliative home care services in Romania

Palliative care in Romania has been pioneered by Hospice 'Casa Sperantei' since 1992. The hospice home care service in Brasov has expanded over this period to provide care for adults with advanced malignant disease, people living with HIV/AIDS and children with a wide range of life-limiting illnesses, with a team also serving the capital Bucharest. The service has been identified as a centre of excellence in south-eastern Europe and has an extensive education programme to develop palliative care further, both nationally and in the neighbouring Balkan countries. Running costs are not re-imbursed by the House of Insurance, but are supported by the County Council. Individual projects fund new developments in the service. The hospice has signed a partnership with the Ministry of Health to develop a national strategy for palliative care.
