An opportunity to care? Preliminary insights from a qualitative study on advance care planning in advanced COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a significant source of human and financialncost worldwide, yet practitioners seldom discuss prognosis or advance care planning (ACP) with thesenpatients. The ascendency of more patient-centered models of care suggests a need for change in ourntraditional approaches to ACP. This paper offers some preliminary observations from a qualitative doctoralnstudy to explore the question: What is required for meaningful, acceptable ACP in the context ofnadvanced COPD?
