IT in healthcare: progress report

The paper considers how increasing computerization and recent regulatory changes are putting new pressures on healthcare information management. Healthcare providers must interact with many insurers, each with a different set of procedures for filing claims and making payments. To simplify the process and reduce the overhead associated with filing insurance claims, HIPAA provides a standard set of electronic transaction formats as well as regulations to ensure the privacy and security of healthcare-related transactions.
