NPR has produced a series on black lung and the failure of the mining industry and the U.S. government to protect miners. Caused by exposure to excessive coal dust, the disease is being diagnosed in younger miners and progressing more quickly, according to NPR's All Things Considered, citing NIOSH data that show incidence of black lung having doubled in the last decade. Edward Petsonk, a pulmonologist at West Virginia University and NIOSH consultant, blames inadequate dust control.
