Back in 1990, a university could claim, from the Higher Education Funding Council, the sum of £6,500 for each and every full-time student enrolled on any of its undergraduate courses. This figure has been adjusted in real terms to represent the equivalent cost indexed to the year 1997. The equivalent figure for a 1997 student in real terms works out to a considerable reduction downwards to £4,790.
