Paper surfaces for printing

Changing the appearance of the printed page by manipulating the level of paper and print gloss is an important tool of the graphic designer. Combinations of imprinted low gloss areas with inked areas of high gloss, or very glossy unprinted and printed areas, help to generate the product image that the publisher or advertiser is seeking to convey. The appearance of the printed page is related to the structure of the paper surface and the way in which it interacts with the ink film. Understanding and controlling this interaction is the goal of printing research at Imerys Minerals' Paper Technology laboratories in St Austell, Cornwall.
