THE ability of digital hardcopy systems to produce photo-realistic images is not only dependent on the hardware device chosen, but also on the properties of the ink or toner system and substrate to which it is applied. Hardcopy systems must satisfy certain desired criteria of colour representation and archival properties. There are several methods of creating a print of a digital image, with the main criteria being image quality, speed of output, longevity of image, and the cost of both hardware and consumables.
