UK plunges into sea data project with five robotic floats

The Meteorological Office has deployed five autonomous data gathering floats into the Irminger Sea south-east of Iceland to relay information on the temperature and salinity of the water. Each of the £10,000 robot floats drift on deep-sea currents until rising to the surface, collecting data on its way up, once every 10 days. This data is then transmitted via satellite to meteorological and oceanographic centres around the world.
