Major players in the rail industry have gone head to head with the government over its programme to bring in more diesel trains. The government is planning to spend £1 billion on a new fleet of diesel trains, which will begin trials in 2012. But a co-signed letter by Network Rail and the Association of Train Operating Companies (Atoc) sent to the Department for Transport's top rail official claims that reliance on diesel rolling stock would be inefficient and wasteful.
