The Health and Safety Laboratory's setting in the Peak District is postcard perfect. Its modern steel and glass building stands among undulating green hills punctuated by treelines, rockfaces and cottages. Inside, experts are busy investigating accidents and devising standards. Their domain extends for a square mile around the main laboratory, and is a veritable child's sandbox of large equipment used to conduct experiments. There's so much to play with -equipment to measure and analyse things with - that it's difficult to imagine an engineer who wouldn't enjoy themselves here.
