Radio telescope array sets world record

Engineering firm Cambridge Consultants is to help design the world's largest telescope, the Square Kilometre Array programme.rnWhen completed in 2020 the array, which will be built in South Africa or Australia, will be thousands of time more powerful than existing radio telescopes such as Jodrell Bank. It features 250 "aperture array" stations, each composed of tens of thousands of small antennae fixed to the ground. The system produces many beams, increasing flexibility and performance and enabling scientists to probe deep space.
