A severe winter unites the nation in a series of common bonds. There's the way we all come together in the face of common enemies, such as public transport companies that aren't transporting, or energy companies charging last year's prices in this year's chill. There are the domestic grumbles we all have about the way loved ones insist on comfort over economy, or the other way around. And winter weather even brings together opposing sides in the climate change debate: it's a symptom, say some, of a shift in the Gulf Stream and the shape of cold winters to come; a symptom, say others, of global cooling, not warming.
