The government wants to strengthen the amount and the quality of the engineering advice it receives without appointing a chief engineering adviser, MPs on the select committee investigating the engineering profession were told last week. Innovation, universities and skills secretary John Denham told the committee: "The real issue is getting the best policy advice and that's an issue where we've made progress. But the government is not there yet in terms of harnessing the best advice within its own structures".
